BonsaiView 2.0 - User's Guide

"BonsaiView" is a file explorer which targets to help in retrieving, analysing and deleting unnecessary files. Files and folders are sorted by size and can be represented in two different views: A "Map" view: each file or folder is displayed as a rectangle which surface is relative to its size. A "List" view: the content of each folder is displayed in a simple list ordered by size.

The initial page displays the size of the internal program memory and also the size of every connected extension memory cards. if your machine has a user's area in ROM ("File Store"), it will be represented like an extension memory card. For each memory area, total and remaining space is displayed. In addition to that, a small graphical gauge gives a fast look of the filling rate: memory space is almost empty. memory space is almost 100% full. From this page, it is possible to: start a detailled analysis of one memory area by selecting this icon. access application options by selecting this icon.

The main navigation page is displayed after selection of the icon in front of the memory area. Current folder name is displayed on the top. If a file is selected, folder name is replaced by the selected filename. The "." character represents current folder. For instance: In this example, current view displays the content of "\Program Files" folder and user selected "BonsaiView.exe" file located in "BonsaiView" sub-folder. The main area of the page displays either the "List" view or the "Map" view. A toolbar is displayed in the bottom: Switch to "List" view. Switch to "Map" view. Refresh display. Show information on selected file. Hide Temporarily selected file (in "Map" view only) Delete selected file. Left side menu item allow you to move up to the parent folder. Right side menu item gives you access to the application options.

"List" view displays content of current folder in a list ordered by decreasing size. This list displays name and size of both files and sub-folders. Sub-folder size correspond to the total size of its content. Navigating in "List" view: Selecting a folder will display its content. Selecting  icon will refresh display (in case modifications have been performed outside of the application).

"Map" view displays the content of the folder in the shape of rectangles whose surface is proportional to the size. User options may change sub-folder representation: either sub-folder is shown in the shape of a single rectangle either sub-folder is analyzed and its content is shown in the shape of one rectangle per file. Navigation in "Map" view: Selecting a folder will display a small menu showing its name. Selecting icon in this small menu will moves to this sub-folder. Selecting icon will temporarily hide selected item. When you are looking for files to be deleted, use icon to hide all files or folders you want to keep. "Map" view will be recomputed accordingly. This icon is very usefull when "Map" view contains a lot of large files which have to be kept. Selecting a file located in a sub-folder will also display a small menu with icon allowing to move down to corresponding sub-folder. Selecting icon will refresh display (in case modification have been performed outside of the application). This update will also un-hide all files and folders which were hidden by  icon.

Select a file in the "List" or "Map" view, then select  icon to show information related to this file.

Select a file in the "List" or "Map" view, then select icon to delete it. A confirmation popup will appear. After deletion, the file is removed from the "List" view and is replaced by a black square in the "Map" view. Select icon to redraw "Map" view after having deleted the file. rebuilding "Map" view may take some time. This is the reason why it is not rebuilt automatically when deleting files.

Application is fully customizable thru a lot of options.

General options:

Units. Select the unit to be used when displaying file or folder size. In general, use "Auto" option. Font: defines the font size used in "List" view. Selecting "Small" will increase the number of displayed lines. Show free space at top level: select this option is you want the free space to be represented in "Map" view. If checked, free space will be displayed at the top level as a black area. Show files in ROM: select this option to display files located in ROM when analysing internal program memory. Because files in ROM cannot be deleted, it may be usefull to uncheck this option when analysing the memory for unnecessary files to be deleted.

Colors for "Map" view

It is possible de select a color for each kind of document. Select the coloured small square will display a color chooser in which you can pick another color.

"Map" view representation

A lot of parameters drive "Map" view. Depth: defines folder representation. 0 means that all files will be displayed regardless of their position in the folders hierarchy. A non-zero value defines the analysis depth. All sub-folder located in a deeper location will not be detailled. Grid: display or not a grid around each file or folder. Cushion: Uncheck it for flat colors. keep "Cushion" option checked if your device is fast. Brightness, Ambiant, Focus & Height: are various parameters driving the look of the "Map" view. Light source location is shown as a small circle in the preview. This small circle can be moved with the stylus. Use button to go back to default representation.
